The Computer Science Institute at the University of Applied Sciences, Wiener Neustadt, Austria offers students high-quality education across various fields of information and communication technologies. The recent creation of four new computer labs enhances the institute’s reputation for hands-on, practice-oriented learning, with each space equipped with more than 20 high-performance workstations.

The new facilities are equipped with a comprehensive Audio-Technica communications solution, centred around the ATND1061LK beamforming ceiling array microphone. Due to the elevated noise levels caused by computer fans and air-conditioning systems, there was a need to support spoken presentations acoustically, without requiring lecturers to wear microphones.

With its Voice Lift technology, the ATND1061LK provides an ideal solution for subtly enhancing speech intelligibility in the room, reducing vocal strain for presenters and helping students remain focused. The microphone features the company’s simple-to-use AT-Link protocol to allow for the transmission of multi-channel digital audio and control information via standard category cables. The system – comprising the ATND1061LK ceiling microphone, ATDM-0604a Digital SmartMixer and ATLK-EXT25 Link Extender – also enables the use of two separate signals for voice lift and teleconferencing, making hybrid sessions possible. The room’s PTZ cameras are also controlled by the ATND1061LK via its voice-tracking function.

“The Voice Lift system provides optimal support for lecturers in the room,” explains Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Mag. Dr. Cornelia Schneider, Head of the Computer Science Institute. “Even longer teaching sessions are possible without any vocal strain. Despite the elevated noise level, students can clearly understand everything.” Siegfried Pinter, who oversees the system for the university, is also enthusiastic about the AT-Link technology: “Audio-Technica Link offers maximum functionality with very simple cabling. Other manufacturers require more complex and costly network protocols to achieve the same. Audio-Technica Link even runs on compact, affordable DSPs like the ATDM-0604a, yet it provides far more functionality than we need for this installation.”

Despite its extensive feature set, the system is simple to set up and operate. “The system runs automatically and requires no interaction,” confirms Schneider. Pinter adds: “We’ve created a reference installation here - one that is attracting significant interest not only within our institution but also from other universities and applied sciences faculties.”
