Closed-Back, On-Ear Headphones

In late July 2026, the German manufacturer Beyerdynamic, based in Heilbronn, introduced the DT 275 PRO , a new, affordable closed-back, on-ear headphone. We tested it for you.
Scope of Delivery and Accessories
The headphones come in a box containing, in addition to the headphones themselves, a fabric carrying pouch, a quick start guide, and a 1.5-meter-long connection cable with a 6.3-mm jack adapter. The cable features a coiled design at both the headphone jack end and the midpoint. The contact surfaces of the plugs and the adapter are gold-plated.
Especially with headphones, the availability of replacement parts is a key factor for long-term use. Body sweat, in particular, wears down the ear pads, which inevitably need to be replaced at some point - and the connection cable is also put to the test during live performances. For the DT 275 PRO, replacement parts are available for the ear pads, the headband padding, and the lockable connection cable.
Design and Technology
The headphones are equipped with 40-mm dynamic drivers that have been specifically designed and tuned to meet the needs of on-ear headphones. The nominal impedance is 45 ohms - which is relatively low. At a drive power of 1 mW, the sound pressure level is already 105 dB SPL (@ 1 kHz), and the maximum sound pressure level is 125 dB SPL. The maximum short-term power handling is 100 mW. The frequency range is specified as 5 Hz to 24 kHz. The weight without the cable is 195 grams. The external noise reduction is 22 dB (A-weighted).
The headband is adjustable (45mm left and right side) and can be set to 14 different positions. The headband is made of metal, and the headband itself is made of plastic with a synthetic leather padding.
There is a jack on each side for the connecting cable, which can be locked in place by turning it. Inside the ear cups, the left and right channels are clearly marked by large “L” and “R” letters, as well as by color coding (the right channel is marked with a reddish hue). Thus, you won’t have to search long to check if you've put them on correctly.
In Practice
Both ear cups can also be folded to the side, allowing the headphones to lie flat on a table. While the ear cups cannot be folded inward, the headphones’ compact size doesn’t necessarily require this feature. It’s important to emphasize once again that these are not over-ear headphones, but rather on-ear headphones. The external noise isolation of 22 dB (A-weighted) is exceptionally good. If you want significantly higher external noise isolation, you’ll have to opt for in-ear headphones.
As you can clearly see in the photo above, the ear pads rest on the outer ear. These pads are swivel-mounted, rest gently on the ear, and provide an acoustic seal. Wearing glasses is also no problem, as the soft pads adjust accordingly. Even during extended use, a high level of comfort is guaranteed without excessive pressure. Of course, the light weight also contributes to its comfort.
These headphones offer very high sensitivity, so they’re loud enough even at low volume settings on the headphone amplifier and have plenty of headroom for live applications. The sound from on-ear headphones differs somewhat from that of over-ear models. This is naturally also the case with the DT 275 PRO. The sound is slightly more direct, as the transducer is positioned closer to the ear, and the acoustic influence of the ear pads is also less pronounced in on-ear headphones. For its size, the Beyerdynamic DT 275 PRO offers very good bass reproduction - but by no means excessive. The acoustic tuning here is well-executed. The sound is very balanced overall, and the transient response is also impressive.
Conclusion
The price of the DT 275 PRO is around 120 euros, which - for headphones of this sound and build quality intended as a professional tool - can certainly be considered a bargain. The range of applications is broader than one might initially think - including, of course, use at the FOH, monitor mixing console, but also as headphones for musicians and, above all, for use in mobile audio and video production - for example, as on-camera monitoring - thanks to their specific sound signature, high external noise isolation, and the comfort offered by the on-ear design.
